Becoming the modern executive: behavioral trends in executive leadership
The last five years have redefined how leaders think about the modern workplace and their role within it. From the influx of virtual work arrangements that challenge traditional ways of managing people to the rise of AI that continues to reshape roles on a near-daily basis, being a leader has never required such adaptability. This is doubly true for today’s executives who not only have to reimagine what it means to be a leader of leaders but also must chart the course for their organization in a period of constant disruption.
At PRADCO, we have assessed thousands of leaders across many industries and witnessed how the focus has shifted for the modern executive. From family-owned manufacturing groups to Fortune 500 industry leaders, we see consistent themes in how executives’ leadership priorities have evolved over the last five years, with several key behaviors becoming more emphasized as leaders prepare for the second half of the 2020s. These are the top five behavioral shifts we have observed in the modern executive:
1. Promoting Teamwork
Between organizational restructuring and the increase in distributed, asynchronous work environments, promoting a culture of collaboration and teamwork has never been more challenging. Thankfully, we consistently see executives meeting this challenge head-on. Executives are setting the example for their organizations through their commitment and modeling of team spirit and cooperation, emphasizing that businesses are at their best when everyone works together as one.
Another way we have seen this challenge manifest is in succession planning. With so many top leaders exiting their roles in retirement, creating a strong team to ensure continuity and sustained organizational success is critical. Executives are being more intentional about encouraging leaders to involve junior team members in their problem solving and decision-making processes. In doing so, they simultaneously accelerate their talent pipeline’s learning and development. By giving them a front-row view of what it takes to succeed at the next level while also building their confidence to make the leap to higher levels of leadership by making them active participants in, and owners of, stretch assignments that challenge their skills and broaden their perspectives, leaders are able to get ahead even faster. Today’s executives recognize that teamwork is not an option, but an imperative.
2. Demonstrating Objectivity
With all the outside influence in today’s business world, cutting through the noise to distinguish between lofty ambitions and practical solutions has never been more important. Across multiple industries, we see executives putting greater emphasis on objective, unbiased analysis. Executives are being increasingly intentional about taking a step back to review all the available facts and data before creating their strategic initiatives, which helps them create well-grounded solutions that are anchored in practical needs.
Just as importantly, we see leaders becoming more mindful about limiting the influence of their personal biases on their decision making. This can be particularly challenging during times of change that require new approaches and ways of thinking. It is hard to let go of proven solutions that have gotten teams through past challenges. It’s even harder to let go of what’s comfortable without clarity on what the future holds and what it means for the business. The last few years have proven that change is a constant that will not be going away anytime soon. In these ever-changing times, remaining grounded is critical to success.
3. Showing Good Judgment
Taking an objective, analytical approach to problems is a crucial first step, but drawing the right conclusions from the data being analyzed is even more important. As complexity and ambiguity become ever more commonplace, top executives are separating themselves from the rest with their ability to consistently draw the right conclusions from the evidence at hand. They take complex information and contextualize it within the realities of their organization to create tailored solutions uniquely suited to their needs. Doing so prepares the business to seize future opportunities without neglecting the day-to-day tactical demands that must be met to achieve that future state.
More recently, we see more executives using AI as a brainstorming tool by using different AI models to challenge their thinking and illuminate different approaches and stakeholders they may not have considered otherwise. This iterative, experimental approach encourages them to remain open-minded and curious, paving the way for innovation.
Executives who show strong judgment:
- Make accurate inferences even when information is limited or incomplete
- Align near-term realities with long-term ramifications
- Balance competing priorities while aligning final decisions with the mission
With all of today’s uncertainty, it’s hard to predict when the next opportunity will emerge. Through planning, judgment, and execution, top executives make every opportunity count.
4. Motivating Others
The modern executive is cognizant that the best results happen when everyone is motivated to put forth their best efforts on a consistent basis. To achieve that, we see leaders making intentional efforts to learn more about people’s unique needs and interests to understand what truly motivates them and where they want to take their career. With those insights in hand, executives find creative ways to support those interests and stimulate higher levels of performance.
This can take multiple forms in practice. For some people, being publicly recognized for their achievements offers tangible positive feedback for a job well done and makes them feel valued and supported. Others prefer offline, one-on-one praise and recognition. Some people respond best to stretch assignments that let them challenge themselves in new ways, driving them to test their skills and grow their capabilities to better address the challenges presented before them. There is no singular “right” way to best motivate your team because motivation is a uniquely personal phenomenon.
The better leaders are able to connect with team members and understand what is most important to them, the better equipped they will be to understand the support and incentives needed to help people deliver their best work.
5. Being Proactive
Keeping up with the speed of today’s business requires a willingness to take independent action to identify opportunities and move things forward, and executives are leading by example. We have witnessed executives steadily broaden their impact by taking on additional challenges and offering additional support across the business. When they run into obstacles or setbacks, they take initiative to find answers and overcome those challenges to create and sustain forward momentum.
In doing so, executives promote a culture of personal accountability. They model the standard of stepping up when they see an opportunity and encourage people to be resourceful to find novel ways of overcoming resistance to progress. When entire teams proactively look for ways to do more and deliver a greater impact, results are often soon to follow.
6. Where Do We Go from Here?
To excel in an increasingly competitive landscape, we see executive leaders putting greater emphasis on promoting teamwork and collaboration, practicing objective decision making, showing sound judgment and critical thinking, motivating their team to higher performance, and setting the example of being a proactive contributor. Taken together, the modern executive instills a culture of collaboration where people are working together to practice well-grounded, analytical decision making that cuts through outside noise to deliver high-impact solutions tailored to practical needs. They understand what it takes to motivate their team to do more while setting the example of being proactive and committed to promoting the success of the business.
As we move forward into the next five years, executives will continue to be challenged on multiple fronts. Though no one can predict all the changes on the horizon, leveraging the skills and behaviors in this post will help leaders create a strong foundation that prepares them to weather uncertain times and guide their organizations into the future.
